✈️ International arrival⛵ Shikara boats🏨 Srinagar

You arrive in Srinagar, Kashmir's enchanting capital, where the team welcomes you. After a rest we glide on a sunset tour in colourful wooden shikara boats across Dal Lake, past floating gardens and historic houseboats. In the evening, a briefing and gear check.

🚐 4h (80km)🏔️ 2730m🏕 Sonamarg camp

A beautiful overland drive through the Sindh Valley, lined with villages and rivers, to Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold' and gateway to the trail. We reach camp at midday to acclimatise and enjoy a first night under the stars in the arms of the Himalaya.

📏 11.6km⬆️ 800m🏕 Nichnai camp · 3500m

The first trekking day. We climb from Sonamarg through pine and birch forests, then enter open pastures where nomadic shepherds graze their flocks. With every hour the sounds of the city fade and the peaks draw closer. We camp in the rock-walled Nichnai valley.

📏 13.5km🏔️ Nichnai Pass 4100m🏕 Vishnusar camp

We cross the first major pass — Nichnai Pass at 4,100 m — then descend into plains carpeted with wildflowers at the height of summer. At day's end the turquoise Vishnusar Lake, first of the great lakes, welcomes us as we camp right on its shores.

📏 16km🏔️ Gadsar Pass 4200m🏕 Gadsar camp

The highest point of the trip. We pass twin Krishansar Lake, then climb Gadsar Pass at 4,200 m, where an unforgettable view opens onto a chain of lakes glittering below. The descent leads into the Gadsar valley — the 'Valley of Flowers' — a coloured carpet ringed by snowy peaks.

📏 11.5km🏞️ The seven Satsar lakes🏕 Satsar camp

An undulating walk through high pastures and mountain army posts, reaching the cluster of seven Satsar lakes scattered among the rocks. A relatively shorter day that lets the body recover while the scenery stays at its peak.

📏 9km🏔️ Zaj Pass 4080m🏕 Gangabal camp

We cross the rocky Zaj Pass and the trip's most beautiful tableau unfolds: the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol beneath the towering Harmukh peak (5,142 m) and its glaciers. We camp for two nights on Gangabal's shores — the trail's grand prize.

🎣 Fishing📸 Photography🏕 Gangabal camp

A free day at the lake for rest and reflection — also a buffer day in case of changing weather. Try trout fishing, walk around the two lakes, or simply sit with a cup of Kashmiri tea facing Harmukh.

📏 13km⬇️ 1450m🚐 2h to Srinagar🏨 Srinagar

One last long descent through dense pine forests to the village of Naranag and its ancient stone temple, where the trekking adventure ends. We drive back to Srinagar to celebrate: a hot shower, a soft bed, and a lavish Kashmiri dinner.

✈️ Return flight

After breakfast the team transfers you to Srinagar Airport for the journey home. You leave this paradise on Earth carrying images of the seven lakes in your memory, and friendships formed on their shores.

الأسئلة الشائعة

كل ما تحتاج معرفته

General
What makes the Great Lakes of Kashmir trip special?+

A route crossing seven successive glacial lakes in the heart of the Indian Himalaya, with flowering meadows and mountain passes above 4,000 m — one of the most beautiful and least crowded trails in the subcontinent.

Is the trip safe?+

Yes. An Omani leader from OmanHikes accompanies you along with a local support team, full tents and camping equipment, and a clear acclimatisation plan across the trekking days.

Do I need a visa?+

The Indian visa is included in the trip price for Omani travellers — see the What's Included details above.

Is a medical document required before the trip?+

Yes. A medical certificate confirming your fitness for walking at altitudes above 4,000 m must be uploaded to your profile before the trip, along with a printed copy of your passport for trail permits.

Fitness & Route
How difficult is the route?+

Rated challenging: nine days of walking with distances up to 16 km a day, crossing several passes above 4,000 m (the highest being Gadsar Pass at 4,200 m) — requiring good fitness and altitude endurance.

Do I need previous camping or trekking experience?+

No technical experience is needed, but prior multi-day trekking or camping experience is preferred so you can settle more easily into the daily routine on the trail.

How should I prepare physically?+

Do long walks on hills or high ground and regular cardio and endurance training for two months before the trip, ideally practising with a loaded backpack.

How is altitude managed?+

The pace is gradual, with a rest day at Gangabal Lake that also serves as a buffer for weather changes, and the trip leader monitors every participant daily.

Gear & Accommodation
Where do we sleep during the trek?+

In fully equipped tents provided by the team at every overnight spot on the lakeshores, in organised camps supported by local staff.

What gear do I need to bring?+

An extensive list including hiking boots, a backpack with rain cover, thermal layers, and personal eating utensils — full details in the What to Bring section above, and a packing guide will reach you after registration.

Is food available throughout the camping days?+

Yes — three meals a day prepared by the local team, and any allergies or special diets are catered for if you tell us in advance.
